A pumpkin can only be placed directly on top of another solid block, and nowhere else

When clicking an item in Minecraft PC 1.4.6, it gets very buggy, shift doesn't work, if a tool, the damage bar moves out of place, and often, the item goes back to its original place for no reason. This is a serious annoyance.
