Dying and losing all items while using nether and end portals

A couple days ago I went to the nether to gather some items but as I jumped into the portal, my game froze and I apparently suffocated in the portal and lost all my items. I then went to the end last night and going through the end portal to get to the end was perfectly fine, however going through the end portal to get back to the over world had also killed me and had made me lose all my items. I feel like many people can relate to losing their hard earned items in a matter of seconds but the fact that all items just disappear without dropping like they normally would when you die is going to, and already is, a pretty big issue. I am upset about losing items, however they’re replaceable. I just hope the portal issues are fixed soon as this is a pretty big issue to many players.
