All mobs/entities in chunks not visited since before 1.21.120.4 are erased after visiting those chunks in 1.21.123.2 and later.

I have been playing about 5,000/20,000 blocks away from spawn for the last ~9 months, updating consistently from 1.20 onwards for each release required to play with XBSX and android. I never noticed any missing mobs in my immediate (~3,000 block) play radius during any upgrade or in the nether. the world was started in 1.16 and is a vanilla LTS.

In the latest 1.21.131.1 I died in the nether, had my bed obstructed, and ended up back at spawn to find ALL entities were gone. all passive mobs, villagers, minecarts, and other entities were simply gone. mobs on leads were missing with leads gone from the pole as well and not on the ground . I found that some bees were still present, which I suspect must have been in their hives at the time of erasure. Checking other places beyond spawn, I found all mobs missing in all areas (even thousands of blocks from spawn) that weren’t being loaded during my time far away,

I tested with a dozen older copies of the world, reopening on .131, and found that the corruption happened between 1.21.120.4 (mobs present at spawn), and 1.21.123.2 (mobs missing from spawn). I haven’t found a suitable tool to statistically analyse the mob disappearance or compare the databases.

Environment

Windows 11 BDS, with android and XBSX clients connecting.

Apologies for the delayed response. this link has a copy of original and 1.31 visited versions of the working and non-working worlds:

Hi, what are the next actions with this? My world is still broken, so I can either revert to the world with entities and lose my progress, or try and merge the entities into the latest release.

If the only option is to accept the loss, I'll have to close the world permanently and start again, which is a sad end.

I reopened an older pre 1.16 world on my xbsx, and villagers that had been zombie cured from a spawner had lost their zombie doctor discounts, so there is a deeper issue with entity handling in bedrock between versions.

as a coda, I ended up restoring from an older backup.

I can see this resolved as a duplicate, but the alternative bug hasn’t been linked. can I please get that linked to this so I can review that bugs' notes?

Thanks for linking. the symptoms appear common, but I think I've added some key information, that my mass entity loss was triggered by a world upgrade. switch users (or users not maintaining BDS) wouldn't necessarily notice a world upgrade took place. The evidence was the stripiness of the corrupted world map vs an uncorrupted one in my uploaded pictures, but also the entity count dropping by hundreds/thousands.
