Open crafting table, no recipes appear, even if you have all the correct supplies. It will indicate if it is craftable or not with the red background. But you cannot see the required pieces for the recipe in the 9 square.
If you then craft the item (for instance an end chest) then the recipe appears in the 9 square with what is missing or available.
