Zombies can attack through the corners of blocks. If you have a diagonal wall that is one-block thick, you can be attacked if you brush up against the wall. If you are in a cave trying to get emergency shelter from mobs, you have to build blocks to occupy the space diagonal to you as well as to the side of you.
