what should happen: when a pig gets struck by lightning it turns into a zombie pigmen and the zombie pigmen holds a sword like normal
what happened: a pig gets hit by lightning and it morphs into an empty handed zombie pigmen
to reproduce: get a pig to get struck by lightning, spawn a ton of pigs and set the weather to thunder and wait until it strikes in the blob of pigs

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

This is most likely intended. The zombie pigmen already exist in the nether, but when a pig gets struck by lighning, where would it get the sword? It can't, so it doesn't. I'm pretty sure if you throw gold swords on the ground, then they can pick them up and use them like they usually do.
