Unable to initialize OpenAL on ~90% of starts

I haven't counted this scientifically but in 9 out of 10 starts I get no sound and the console says this:

ERROR byt Error in class 'LibraryLWJGLOpenAL'
ERROR byt Unable to initialize OpenAL. Probable cause: OpenAL not supported.

This happens even with the default launcher and an unmodified client and after many, many retries (re-starting game) it works properly.

In case you're wondering: Everything else on my computer works perfectly fine and all my drivers are up-to-date.

As you can imagine, this is borderline annoying. This started happening, I think, with 1.8, although I'm not sure. Never had this issue with 1.7 though!

PS: I've searched before creating a new issue. I've extensively searched the internet and this JIRA to no avail. I found a lot of stuff on the net with that issue with posts ranging back as far as 2012 and I found the search in this JIRA to be not very helpful at all.

Please advise 🙂

This would be an issue outside the game as it's one of the libraries that cannot be initialized. Considering it's for OpenAL specifically, I'd suspect it's caused by outdated or broken audio drivers. Regardless, the issue goes outside the scope of what this bug tracker can fix.

@unknown: Wow... how convenient for you. I do not agree though. You bundle those libraries. Even if I were to update those libraries, the launcher would replace them with the one YOU BUNDLE. You did not even read the full description, as I've said my drivers are up-to-date. And considering that Minecraft is the ONLY application that has any sound issues whatsoever on my computer, I'd be hard pressed to accept my audio driver is broken. Besides that I also stated that I do not have this issue at all with older versions of Minecraft. You just ignored that as well.

I'm not expecting you to perform some magic trick to make it work but it would be nice if you would at least read the description and not ignore any facts before drawing conclusions. As a paying customer I would very much appreciate this.

@Dominik I was having the same issue, from the looks of it, this was fixed with a driver update to the Game Ready Driver from nVidia's GeForce Experience in my case. The issue became present after downloading the newest snapshot at the time (which was a fix for another issue, funny as it is.)

I hope that helps.

@Aaron Atkins: This actually doesn't help. For one I fail to see how a graphics driver update would have any influence on that, except maybe if you're using HDMI or DP audio and b) I don't even have an Nvidia GPU to begin with...

FYI, this issue will be fixed in 1.13

The update still fixed it. The issue likely was a mix of OpenGL's update and Minecraft's library update I believe. I still have the issue when loading anything but the newest version of Optifine as well. OpenAL uses OpenGL libraries, and is handled via GPU.
Quick Fix I use for older versions of Optifine (and prior to the driver update, official versions): Once loaded, hit F3+T to reload the resources.

Yeah, the updated version of LWJGL also lead to an updated OpenAL version that fixed that bug.

You can technically manually update OpenAL (using a version newer than the one used with LWJGL), but it's a rather large pain so I'm not going to explain how.

OpenAL's website states that the last stable release was back in 2008, version 1.1.

I take it that is why newer versions are a pain to install, considering you have to get them from the Github.
