crafting table disappears and I get my item back

Sometimes, when an item breaks and I want to create a new item, I see my old item back and I can use for example my iron pickaxe again to destroy just 1 more block.

It can be even more strange. An item breaks. I make a crafting table. I place it dawn and it immediately disappears. And sometimes I see for example my old pickaxe back in my inventory to break again one more block.
