Game crashes just after Mojang logo screen.

The Minecraft launcher starts without difficulty. After logging in, The Mojang logo screen appears, but rather than transition to the starting screen, the logo is followed by the dirt background that normally accompanies the world select menus. A few seconds later the game crashes. The crash report seems to suggest that the problem is related to Java (see attachment).
