Chest GUI doesn't update while receiving from hopper

When placing a hopper with preferably a lot of items in it on top of (and connected to) a chest and then opening (the GUI of) the chest, I don't see the items appearing in the chest. The GUI just shows the inside of the chest as if nothing is added. (When the GUI is reopened after the transfer, the items do appear.)
