In the screenshot below is myself typing in the chat and how the font is being displayed.
It seems to be inconsistent on its spacing. I only pressed the spacebar when necessary, other than that, the random spaces are the games doing.

Duplicate of MC-10426, please use the search function to see if your bug has already been submitted. Currently over 53% of tickets are being closed as duplicate.
That bug seems to deal with exclamation points when this is related to inconsistent spacing.
