Enderman not hostile

I was just walking around minding my own business and an Enderman pops up so I think oh I'll try to get an enderpearl, so I try to get it to me by staring directly at it, it does nothing then I go to it and hit it, it walks away from me, then I kill it and it drops an enderpearl.
