ender pearl goes through 10+ blocks then suffocate in block

Hi, thought this may be a bug so here.When an ender pearl is thrown towards a nether portal that has any type of solid block behind it the ender pearl will go through the blocks .And if there is more blocks beyond the portal the player will suffocate,or will go through the blocks. Also sometimes if the ender pearl is just thrown toward the portal (like to go through it) it will never land like it was not thrown.
