I have installed Minecraft today. I also installed the latest version of Java. When i launch Minecraft i can log in then when i press play the screen goes black. I can hear the minecraft music put the screen stays black. I have tried re-installing Minecraft and it has made no difference.

This is what is in the game launcher log. I couldn't find the option to select "All" in the launcher log as it looks different to how it is displayed in the link above.

Please check if the fix in MC-112780 fixes your issue.

THank you this is now fixed. I updated the graphics driver.
Please tell us what the game's output log says. You explicitly have to enable the game output log in the launcher options.
