Breaking or Placing Block powers Piston

When building a redstone circuit as seen in the picture below, placing or breaking a block next to the piston causes it to extend. Replacing or breaking the block does not affect the piston. Heading of piston appears to be irrelevant, as well as type. Also works when moving or removing a block with a piston.
