redstone and pistons

What I expected to happen was...:
after the button is released the piston will retract

What actually happened was...:
the piston stayed non-retracted

Steps to Reproduce:
1. place the piston facing upwards on a block and then put a wooden button on the side of the block. put a redstone block on top f the piston and press the button!
