All sounds only play half. ie: You only hear half of the creeper blast,half a zombie groan, hear half of the damage sound , Etc.

Redownload the sounds by stoping minecraft, deleting the folder .minecraft\resources\ and restart minecraft. Redownloading of the sounds will take several minutes.
If that won't help, please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crash report here.
