Crashes with Survival or Creative games in single player mode whenever I tell the world to open. I have been able to access the multiplayer game that I have a server for on my system and last night accessed a friend's server.

Your Java is outdated, please update to the latest version 1.7 Update 17.
Please check / delete the file %appdata%\.minecraft\saves\<worldname>\session.lock
- maybe that file is hanging around and cannot be deleted or cannot be created (no read/write access rights to that directory ?)
