Flint and steel no longer creates fire on side of block / cause block update

This bug is caused by fixing MC-4923.
Previously players used flint and steel to activate buds and observers without placing blocks. Since 17w48a this feature was removed. I know it looks like intended behaviour technically, but I think removing worldwide used feature, even when basing on bug, was not intended.

The difference between removing this feature and fence-starter of item elevator is that there is no other method to manually activate observers than flint and steel, when item elevators can be easily redesigned.

In this case I have to ask mods to not close this report and leave it for devs to check it out. This is not the first time when bugfix removed/broke feature. There are examples of rollbacking bugfix or readding feature as exception.

Feature request, not a bug.

Feature request for accidently removed feature isn't a bug report?

FaRo1

Correct. Workaround: Place a torch on the observer. When the flying machine starts, it breaks. For static systems, you can place a daylight sensor and invert it to send updates.

accidently removed feature

It was not removed accidentally.

Daylight sensors don't work, they send out updates every time the signal strength changes based on the time of day.

You can put something there of which you can later change the state back and forth, like a lever, a comparator, a cauldron, a flower pot, etc.
You can also place and break a block. If you do it quickly, you can also just send one signal, the best block for that would be a slime block, or if you worry about pistons moving stuff with it, a flower pot. Or, if you are brave, TNT.

For static structures, this is not really that much of an issue. The real problem is for complex flying machines, where you need everything to be movable, and not stick to other components.

More often than not, you have BUD piston lines facing sideways or upwards, which means you cannot place torches or flower pots on top of them. If you place a block, it would stick, and if you break it again, you need to do it in the same gametick, in the correct part of the tick, or else the sticky piston would recognize being updated twice, and lose the block.

The reason why flint and steel was so useful was because it was block-update-instant in placing AND destroying the fire, leaving no room for double triggering of components. A valid replacement for this mechanic would need to achieve the same thing, create an update that cannot double trigger anything - even within the same gametick.

FaRo1

Yes, a simple torch does this. It breaks as soon as the observer moves, creating a second update, but when an observer moves, it updates anyway, so it's exactly what you want.

> you have BUD piston lines
I was referring to pistons. The are far superior to observers in flying machines as they can instantly transmit signals. You cannot use a torch for this unless you can place blocks on top of the piston base, which most of the time you cannot.

Please don't use the comments for discussions. Please use the /r/Mojira subreddit instead. In fact, @unknown already started a thread about this (Link).

Edit: At the moment, fire charges just work like flint and steel did before, use those instead.
