17w49a+ crash: Initializing game / java.lang.IllegalStateException: Not a JSON Object: null

The bug

Minecraft crashes when launching snapshot versions 17w49a/b and 17w50a. I have already seen MC-121738 , which says that disabling custom resolution would fix the problem. This didn't work for me, however.
To clarify, all versions and snapshots prior to 17w49a work perfectly fine, even 17w48a works perfectly.

Does disabling your resource pack fix the issue?

Sorry for the late response. No, unfortunately, it doesn't. When launching I made sure that I had no resource packs on. Do you know of any another solution that might help? Thanks

MaximusMidnight

I have a similar problem, but my game can't launch 1.13 again. Additionally, unlike some of the duplicates, the problem was started when I opened the resource pack menu, without actually loading any resource pack. [I put this here in case it helps in fixing the issue at all. If a mod wants me to take this comment down, I will.]

Hello all,

I have managed to find a fix for this (that has worked for me at least):

Simply go to your .../AppData/Roaming folder, and rename your .minecraft folder to something else. Then, open minecraft client, login, and download 1.13. This should create a brand new .minecraft folder. Once that's done, move your saves file from the original .minecraft folder into the new one that is created. Now, you should no longer get the error, and you have all your saves! (you may remove the old .minecraft folder if you wish)

tl;dr: Get a fresh install of Minecraft through removing the .minecraft folder and letting the mc client create a new .minecraft folder.

Thanks, Pie

This fix worked for me! Thank you so much!

Player from the Linux version here. Tried this fix, among others, and it doesn't work for me.

I marked MC-133098 as related to this issue. MC-133098 is a server crash, this is a client crash, but they're essentially the same core issue.

Please check if this issue is still happening in 18w33a.

Is this still an issue in Minecraft 1.13.1?
