Crafting table uncraftable

I can not craft the crafting table. Also, charcoal is now craftable???
EDIT: Further testing; the recipe for furnaces (8 cobble) now crafts 1 smooth stone. The crafting table is craftable in the crafting table, but not in the inventory.
EDIT 2: Most of the crafting recipes in the "recipe menu" thing on the left side on the inventory is not visible, e.g. the furnace is not visible unless i have 8 cobblestone in my inventory, even when i've put it on "Showing all" mode
UPDATE!
It appears that the first slot of the crafting grid, both in the crafting table and in the inventory, has the same function as a furnace, hence why the furnace recipe yields 1 stone. I can now smelt iron ores instantly if put in the first slot, nice but limiting feature.
UPDATE 2:
It appears that the game doesn't recognise the crafting recipe for the furnace, because the chest recipe works, even though it uses the first slot in the crafting grid. Also, the pickaxe, sword and other recipes works and the game does not try to smelt the stone.
