Slabs at y 256 causing major lag

Making a 33x33 diamond of slabs at y 256 and then breaking/replacing one or more of the slabs causes frames per second to drop to 0. This is very annoying, as it the effect can be replicated and/or automated with a piston on a clock pushing and pulling a slab.
