While Oak and Jungle trees will grow adjacently (naturally and with bone meal), Birch and Spruce trees do not.

I honestly think this should be fixed by making oak and jungle trees not grow next to each other, instead of the other way round. While it may be useful for some redstone powered tree factories it just looks weird and unnatural.
These types of trees are not supposed to spawn next to each other. Only jungle and oak are supposed to.
Why should they not grow together but the others should? What makes those trees special?
Really, none of them should grow adjacent probably (as Jonathan said), it doesn't really make sense.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.6.4 / Launcher version 1.2.5 ? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
This appears to be fixed as of 13w36a, judging by Mog's comments on MC-30686. Testing showed that all tree types except 2x2 Jungle trees can grow adjacent to another tree. The 2x2 jungle trees may possible as well, I just haven't had any luck with them yet.
Edit: Further testing has shown that the 2x2 jungle trees are possible, though the result is a bit odd looking since the wood blocks will not replace any vines on the side of the existing tree(s)...
It has been like that for a very very long time(:
