Unknown if this is now intended... Growing a 2x2 Spruce changes the surround ground of dirt/grass into podzol as seen in the pictures.

Trees
Large spruce trees now transform nearby grass blocks into podzol when they grow.

Thats on the gamepedia site, but curious to know if this is intentional
