Ladders can be placed on air in specific circumstances involving stairs.

Place two stairs, one of them being placed one block north-west of the other one, with no backsides towards the middle. When placing a ladder on the southern side of the northern stair, the ladder will be placed as if it was sitting on a block so the south of it.
