Villagers are not returning to houses at night

At night villagers are just staying out doors instead of heading inside. Sometimes they will start to do their super dash to get indoors but they will stop after about a second and just continue on. I can not find a way to force them inside their houses. Also it would be nice if when they are inside a zombie can't damage them by just pressing up against the door.
