Air Blocks burning

I was exploring a map in creative mode and noticed lava in a mine shaft with wood floors. I got rid of the lava and started putting out fires on the wood. I notice there was fires starting on blocks that appeared to be just air. This happened both beside and underneath blocks. I didn't see it happen above blocks just the normal flames if the block was on fire. 

Of course those air blocks on fire allowed fire to then spread to blocks that were wood again.

Another issue I noticed fires continued to burn even though blocks were destroyed.

It could be the issues are related. Such as the system thinks the wood block is still there but no longer is rendering it as if it is destroyed.
