Recreated worlds when placed in "saves" folder

When I put an old world in my "saves" folder in .minecraft, it is recreated and it loses every change I have done.

What I expected to happen was to continue my old worlds but with a new version of Minecraft.

What actually happened was that I lost all progress made in the world.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Make a world with any version of Minecraft
2. Update Minecraft
3. Put your old world folder in the new "saves" folder
4. Open Minecraft, go to that world and it will be recreated

So then don't put old maps in the new saves. Maps are like photographs. If I take a picture, put it into a folder full of old pictures, then junk the old pictures but keep the one I just took, all I have is the old picture. If I then put it in a new folder of new pictures, then I still have the old picture, but it's in a different spot. All you are doing is moving an old picture to a new folder. It won't change because it's already recorded.
Did you expect anything different?

Do not understand.
Why do you put old maps in new worlds ?
The map_xx.dat is only the graphical data part of the maps, the rest is stored in the world itself.

Do you mean maps as in the item or are you talking about level saves?

I'm talking about level saves
