When building a gate that closes at night, and opens in the day, I noticed that the daylight sensor would choose a random signal value whenever I exited and re-entered the chunk, usually a value of 1 or 2 blocks. For example, I leave the chunk in the day, and when I return at night the gate remains open. When I leave at night when the gate is closed, and return at night, the gate opens as if it is day. The Daylight sensor resets to the correct state at sundown and sunrise. I have attached pictures of the gate and the underground redstone. This is a relatively minor issue, however it can be annoying.

What is the purpose of the comparator? What happens if you remove it?

Remember that if the chunk is unloaded, Redstone can start acting up. I sense a relation.
