Baby pigs vanish instead of maturing

Baby pigs are vanishing instead of growing up.

What I expected to happen was...:
I fed the pigs and got babies. After a while I returned expecting the babies to have matured.

What actually happened was...:
The adults were still there but only the number I originally started with before breeding. This does not seem to affect cows, chickens, or sheep.

I was not able to reproduce this with pigs from spawn eggs. I attempted once and fed the baby until it grew and once I allowed it to age naturally.

Is this a world that was originally generated in 1.12? Can you provide any other details that may help reproduce this glitch?

Yes, this world was originally 1.12.2.  I came back just now and was down to one baby pig (out of 6) so I watched it. It suddenly started flashing red like it was taking damage and then fell over and died.

I bred another 6 piglets and watched. I always put a small pond in the enclosure with the pigs & cows, but now the piglets seem to be drowning instead of "playing." The calves must be tall enough to not drown. Tried with another set of piglets but kept them away from the water. They matured in the normal manner and became adults. So this seems to be an issue with baby animals drowning in one block deep water.

Sounds like the pigs are drowning in the one block deep water once you leave the chunk
