furnace only works when facing east or west.

If I place items in a furnace facing east/ west it works. If I place it facing north I can put items in  the furnace but it will not smelt them. I have seen similar issues but I don't think it is a duplicate since the items can be removed fine and the problem seems to be in the direction.
