End Gateway Portals Taking Players to Empty Island In No Mans Land

After defeating the Ender Dragon, a friend and I decided to go through the end gateway portals, and to our surprise we were on a small island about 5x5 blocks and there was nothing to be found. I loaded the world in creative on a single player save, and it was the same thing nothing but void for miles. We then decided to check to see if it was just a fluke and tried using a new end gateway portal which meant we had to defeat the Ender Dragon once again. Once completed a new end gateway portal appeared and we went in. However it only led us to another island which helped us none. My friend and I have done over 2 hours of Google searching and nothing has shown so we decided this would be fitting.
