How do you open to lan?

I tried using the port only and it couldn't connect to the server, and then I did my IP address with colon and then port and then I also just tried my IP address. I also looked at a guide on youtube that says to set java and Minecraft on private and to allow access through the firewall. It still doesn't work. How am I supposed to fix this? Thank you.
