When dying and landing on any sort of solid surface, the game will hitch, and then chunks will unload and it'll remain that way until you respawn.

I can confirm. Happened during a Livestream after I had died and my bed was obstructed. Died in the Nether and respawned into what I can only describe as "Hardcore Mob Rave in Space". I had to log out, log back in, but because I had switched to spectator, the chunks I guess still failed to load. Switching to Creative and then relogging again had fixed it.
