Torches and other light sources don't give off light

Torches and other light sources normally give off light, but when logging back on to my friend's realm, all the torches and lanterns in my base no longer give off light until they are broken and replaced.  This is frustrating because the server is locked on hard and I have to fight through hordes of monsters and die multiple times just to re-light my base.
