Villagers Teleport Underground

I was digging a 2 deep hole under my village to easily work on the wiring of my village's redstone lamps. While I was doing this, a bunch of my villagers somehow teleported down into the underground area with me. I believe this happened when i teleported into the nether and back. They were put underground instead of the blocks above. I checked a few times to make sure there was no hole they went down. This village also had almost 20 natural iron golems. not sure if that is normal or not.
