Minor Villager Interaction Problem

So I was trying to interact with a cartographer in my village. I had some cooked chicken in my off hand and an iron sword in my main hand. I had about one and a half icons of hunger missing, so when I right clicked on the cartographer my character began to eat the cooked chicken. I didn't want to eat it at the time, so I exited the villager's trading UI and tried again. I tried it multiple times and every time I right clicked on the villager, my character began eating the chicken again, so I had to take the chicken out of my off hand. I don't know what caused this problem, but it's at the very least mildly annoying.
