Sliding off blocks broken below feet

When you are standing on top of a block and you break it, sometimes (most of the time, in my experience), you will slide sideways, sometimes completely being chucked off of it. 
This happens with all blocks as far as I am aware. It's as though the middle of the block is still there when you're falling, so it just pushes you to the side. 
This will happen even if you are crouching.
