When you type in the command it simply gives you a normal sword rather than the sharpness sword. (it worked for a little while but stopped.)

Your command is incorrect ("Enchantment" instead of "Enchantments"). This one should work:

/give @p minecraft:diamond_sword{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:sharpness",lvl:1}]}
