parrots occasionally disappearing when you take them from a boat

i was bringing a parrot i tamed home in a boat. i got out and stood next to the boat to get the parrot onto my shoulder (i had already done this multiple times, and knew it should work) but then the parrot was gone. (i hadn't fallen down any blocks, as i checked almost immediately) i couldn't find the parrot with f3+b and didn't hear any of the mob sounds that parrots usually make.
