Chunks reverted to original state

I started up my computer and joined my Minecraft world and then I noticed that a chunk was missing from my water transportation system. The area was unlit even though there was torches right next to it and the water wasn't flowing (I tried to update the water on the left). It looked that the chunk had been reverted to it's original state. Then I looked around and noticed that there were multiple unlit chunks nearby.
