I use riptide but dont hit anything and i takes away durability even though its not supposed to.

It does it for both in water and raining. I am transported with it. The trident does just a normal riptide animation when it doesnt hit anything.
Every right-click with the trident counts as throwing it and therefore takes up durability. Whether you hit something or not is irrelevant.
the wiki says that if you dont hit anything the riptide wont take durability
Are you standing in water or rain when you throw it? What does the trident do if it "doesn't hit anything?" Are you transported with it?
