I was breaking a tree I didn't want with the help of fire when suddenly floating fire appeared. I couldn't break it or walk into it. But it burned out like normal fire and left me brainwashed.

I've seen the same in the nether on server. I put it out by putting another block there, despite it not being attached to anything.
