I wanted to build a slime elevator but when i built it the piston didn't pull the slime back.

This seems to be a directional issue; using the setup provided by OP, when the repeater is facing south or west, the slime block is pulled back as normal. When the repeater is facing north or east, the slime block is left behind.
It doesn't appear to be related to transparency, as glass behaves the same as solid blocks in this situation.
