See attached screenshot for the reproducible situation. Despite having safe places at the head and foot of the bed, the player will consistently awaken in the 1-block deep lava, dying as a result and losing all their goodies. Orientation n-s or e-w makes no difference.
This is reproducible by simply recreating the situation as pictured...
1-block wide safe passage over 1-block-deep lava, with the walls being at y=1 but air at y=.

I guess this is the right bug report for this? I was recently watching a streamer and they went to bed only to be placed in a lava stream on waking:

This happened on a vanilla SMP 1.15.2 Java server. Despite there being safer places the game chose a lava stream which was on the other side of some blocks from the bed meaning that the player had to dig themself out.
Filling in the walls solid at y=~0 causes the game to chose the safe places at the head and foot of the bed. See attached screenshot demonstration.
