Follow the instructions at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2gHwosANtY to get infinite rails. This works with normal, powered and detector rails since version 1.3.1.

it appears that the speed of the piston accompanied by fast placing causes multiple placements and drops during one piston movement, despite the lack of multiples in the placed graphic

Tested, only seems to work with powered rails

Confirmed in 1.4.6.

As of 13w01a you can duplicate rails even easier. Also works with trap doors.

Heres a few screenshots, i am on a bukkit server, but this is comfirmed in ssp as well. any rail can be duplicated.
