So I made a kelp farm based on youtube videos. Sadly the pistons deactivate water blocks rendering every water flow and float based farm useless.
What I expected to happen was...:
Items would float up to the water surface normally.
What actually happened was...:
Items stuck floating on the active water block.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Build any water float based structure.
2. Use a piston in the water.
3. The water block that was "pushed" by the piston will refill with water but the new water block won't be active, cancelling the floating physics and items won't float up to the surface.

But the water CAN reform. There are active water blocks under it and above it. As soon as the piston draws back a new water block froms. Furthermore farms based like this work online. Why won't they work for me?
Water only reforms if there are two water source blocks adjacent horizontally.
Perhaps you looked up a tutorial for Bedrock Edition, where water mechanics work a lot differently.
I see! So that means if I let the kelp block grow 3 blocks high and I put one row of active water above the observer it should work? like: https://ibb.co/m6gkLr3 This?
This farm design works only if the water can reform. That's not a bug, but just normal water mechanics.
