Items dropped from the inventory menu despawn after 1 minute rather than 5

Items dropped by the player directly from the inventory menu will despawn after only 1 minute. Items in Minecraft typically despawn after 5 minutes so I believe this to be a bug.

To reproduce:

  1. Throw an item on the ground by dropping an item from the inventory menu (NOT by pressing the drop key)

  2. Observe the item despawns after 1 minute

The bug can be seen in this short video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynmw3S2mLHM&feature=youtu.be

With the introduction of Honey Blocks in 19w41a I believe that this bug should be reopened.

Honey Blocks can move items only when they are moved with items on top of them. This means testing any item transport with honey blocks requires items to be present in the world itself. This makes the items despawning after 1 minute problematic because the items don't last as long as they do in every other scenario (dropping with Q, or in survival).

This creates a situation where players are inconvenienced and have to go back to survival to throw items, when they were already in creative for testing honey block creations (and all other creations for that matter).

MC-106494 was as marked WAI over 3 years ago. This should be reopened and reconsidered by the devs.

I'll check whether we can reopen the original ticket. It was closed on the basis of the source code explicitly stating that this should happen, hence the chances of this not being WAI is rather slim. It would definitely be great to have a explanation by Mojang though.

MC-106494 has been reopened and rewritten. Feel free to leave a vote for it and add any missing information if I missed something.
