If you are breaking glass, you might notice that rain/snow is not visible through the cracking texture, while all other items behind it remain visible.
See screenshot. Note that snow is visible though the pane, but areas cracked show no snow behind.

I can't see the sky through snowflakes, but they're so small that it's hard for the entire sky to be covered.

The parts in between the snowflakes are transparent, which makes the entire texture transparent.
