[MC-167530] Anvils causing java.lang.StackOverflowError

Whenever I put a diamond pickaxe into the first slot of an anvil, java raises a StackOverflowError. Why does this happen, and can it be fixed?

It's been patched in 1.15.1-pre1

But it was a problem with any item of durability in Multiplayer. If you put a full durability item in the first slot of an anvil, it crashes. Gamemode and dimension don't matter.
